...my date's better than your date :)

Before:

After!!!

I am so grateful for good neighbors! My old Young Women's leader made this dress for her daughter a couple years ago, and she let me wear it!

I loved Prom!

Radiant Tales: Chapter Three

It's almost six forty-five. He's always on time- always. So he should be here.
My fingers shake as I button up my dress. It's light pink with little white beads up the side. The kind of dress I'd only dreamt of wearing as a little girl. I don't know why I'm nervous- maybe it means that tonight will be the best night I've ever had.
With one more glance in the mirror to make sure my hair is just right, I put on a smile and walk out into the living room where he is waiting. In his hand, he is holding a beautiful corsage- three pink baby roses and little white flowers to add to the elegance.
Boys have everything easy. Even though it's prom, he probably took ten minutes to get ready. What's more, he doesn't have to try very hard to put the corsage on my wrist. When it's my turn to give him the "male flower," I analyze the situation, stare at the flower, and I realize I don't have a clue how to pin it on... Maybe I should have practiced pinning the boutenir on my dad first, because it takes at least three minutes to pin it on his tux. He is laughing, but I guess that's okay. I probably looked ridiculous, struggling with his rose.
...thank goodness for mothers.
After at least ten rounds of pictures with my dad's camera and three with my brother's, he opens the door. I look at my mom, wondering if she's thinking about how much I have grown up. I give her a hug and a quick kiss. Then I look at dad. What do dads think when they watch their girls go on dates? I see it in his smile. He looked excited for me, and I decided that he was probably sending me a message like, "I love you!" and "Remember who you are!"
And so we walk out the door. Since I'm wearing high heels, they get stuck easily in the wet grass. I'm glad it's not raining.
Just kidding. Now it starts to sprinkle. We drive around the corner to one of the boys' houses. After thirty rounds of pictures and ten minutes of smiling, we head off to dinner.
And it's still raining. But I don't mind. I'm just happy that I am in a dress going to a dance with someone I admire. It's pretty cool to think that he asked me...why? I guess I'll never know.
Dinner was delicious- Olive Garden. The thing about prom night is that every boy and his date goes there to eat... so we see lots and lots of teens. Not to mention the hundreds of other people that just stare at us :) But it's all good fun. A couple of them ask, "What are you dressed up for?" .....well, girls don't usually wear flowers on their wrists and walk in dresses like this for kicks and giggles...and boys don't normally wear a tux, just to go to dinner, now do they?
some people just make me laugh :)
We talk and make jokes about shot-guns, the waiters, our dresses, hair, the forks, etc. I haven't had this much fun for a long time.
Then, with my dress hiked up to my knees, the two other girls and I pretty much hop, skip, and try not to trip as we make our way through the rain back to the car. I can feel the anticipation build- I get to go dance now!
We don't get lost, which is a good thing, but we also don't find a parking spot... I guess that's because we didn't really look for one. We just sorta parked out in the boondocks so that we could make a quick getaway after the dance. Fifteen hundred teenagers driving cars can get a little jammed.
So, once again:
(sing to "Over the River and Through the Woods")
out of the car door and over the mud
with my dress hiked up to my knees,
the boys lead the way as we run through the rain
And try not to trip on our dress..ees!!!
I see a bunch of my friends there, along with dozens of girls in beautiful dresses. It's like going to a ball!
And then we turn the corner....
Stairs.
I just stare at them.
I knew I should have practiced at home...
Back to "the guys have everything easy" idea.
They do.
On a scale from one to ten, how hard do you imagine it is to:
1. Lift up your dress
2. Keep your high heels on
3. Watch the girl in front of you (who has a train at least a foot long)
4. Try not to sweat
5. talk to your date who seems to be laughing at you
and walk up the stairs without tripping, all at the same time?
on a scale from one to ten...
a billion.
Okay, lets be honest here. Girls are pretty talented. And to tell you the truth, after walking up and down three flights of stairs doing this three times in a two hour time period, heck I could do anything.
We get to the top floor and I feel like jumping up and down. I can't wait to get out there and have a blast.
Well, I don't need to worry about a blast- the music took care of that. It wasn't freakishly loud; just enough to make it so I couldn't hear my date talk to me.
He seems quiet as we walk in. I'm not quite sure what he's thinking. We walk around for a while to find a spot. Well, we needn't have bothered. Remember how there's fifteen hundred teens here? Well, the room probably was built to accommodate... oh, good grief, I don't know- a lot of people, but not that many.
After getting bumped, squished, stepped on, and jumped on, we start to dance. It's a great feeling! I hold up my dress because it's a little poofy, but thankfully not too much.
We dance to a plethora of songs, some good and some bad (we leave on the bad ones), and then we hear the slow dance music come on.
Now the room gets quiet as people start to form couples. He asks me to dance, and I say yes. We have a lot of great things to talk about. Mostly we stay in the same spot because there's no room to do anything. I'm still holding my dress. I've never had this dilemma before...Which hand are you supposed to hold it in? Am I supposed to hold the back or the side? Eventually it all worked out.
After a while the room gets hot. We go downstairs to take a break. As our group stands in a circle, I take off my high heels...they really do make a difference! He's really surprised to see how short I really am. It's kind of fun to be deceiving... :) I'll be doing it for the rest of my life! Who knew high heels could be so wonderful and awful at the same time? It's a love hate relationship that I guess the guys will never figure out. We sacrifice height for a few blisters. No biggie. We're tough :)
Then it's the stairs again. I feel like I'm getting a double work out. Arms and legs. And a little bit of toes. They really do keep your balance. The next time we go up, we take the elevator :)
It's still hot and stuffy up there, but I don't care. As we dance, we talk about school and growing up. It's sort of a confidence booster to talk to someone who knows a little more than I do about getting older. Even though we're both seventeen. He's a senior and he can't wait to graduate. I'm a junior and I can wait to graduate. All the same, it's fun to get to know someone a little better. Those couple minutes of dancing were such a fun moment. I decide I can't wait for the next slow dance.
And then it's over and we're back outside, running through the rain to get to the car. My high heel gets stuck in the mud, but I quickly pull it out and no one notices :)
When he walks me up to the door, I tell him how glad I am that he asked me. He will never really know what it's like for a girl to be asked. Especially me, who is still stuck trying to figure out why it was me in the first place.

A night of elegant dresses, pictures, smiles, laughs, and a hug, it was the most enjoyable night I've had in a long time. I'm glad, Trevor, it was with you!

Quote of the Day

Love,

Sunshine

For Kicks and Giggles

I would just like you all to know:

I SURVIVED THIS WEEK OF SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!

And I hope ya know, it was rough and I would never do it again :)
I don't normally go to comics to get my stress out- normally I woud be singing the music from Tangled, playing the piano, noodling on the violin, reading my Book of Mormon, or sleeping. Yup. Those are my destressing methods. But here is one thing that hopefully makes you smile, because I sure do- every time I read them .
Enjoy!

With Love,

Sunshine

Radiant Tales: Chapter Two

Because of you, I got to have my first sleep over!!!! It won't ever happen again...but it wouldn't have happened at all if it wasn't for you, christina :)

Because of you, my day turned from sad and rainy to happy and bright. You told me to go home and say my prayers...well, the truth is,  I said one just before you called my name :)

Because of you and you,

you,

you,

 and you,

I had a girls camp that was unlike any other. Isn't it funny how we all ended up in the same ward together? Heavenly Father knew I needed you. You are all my bosom buddies! I luj you!

Because of you, it wasn't so hard to live where I never thought I would live.
You became my best friends- and that was no coincidence.

Because of you, I learned how to make beautiful music. I found out more about myself and I developed passion for the gift I was given.

Because of you, I never have a lonely day, an uneventful minute, or a boring family outing. :)

In fact, they just get better and better.

And of course, there are countless others who I don't have pictures of. What really matters, is that everyone of you is special to me. Because of you, my life is brimming with sunshine!

With Love,

Sunshine

Radiant Tales: Chapter one

 I like surprises.

Surprises like birthdays and getting asked to dances.

Sometimes, surprises make you happy and boost your self esteem- like when you are 99.987654321% sure that you are going to fail your math test, and then, come to find that your score is the best one you've ever gotten on a math test before. That sure makes your day, right?

And then there's the not so fun surprises, like the ones exactly opposite of passing a test....they’re the kinds of surprises that just make your eyes pop out of your head. For example, turning in your homework and finding out that it was late, so now you have a “C.” Not fun.

But the best surprises in the world are the ones that come completely out of the blue.

Like when your best friend tells you that you look gorgeous, even though you had four minutes to get ready.

Or when you've had a rough day and then an unexpected somebody says "hi" to you in the halls. J (Giggles!)

However, I believe that  these "surprises" aren't just "out of the blue."I believe these surprises are special; they’re the personalized, individual, wonderfully unexpected gifts that give you strength to keep going, even when your feet are aching.

They're called blessings.

And I am the recipient of so many each day.

My story today is simply this:

"When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed, when you are discouraged thinking all is lost, count your many blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done."

Trials aren't as hard to carry if you walk with a cheerful heart.

Here's a little poem that my Heavenly Father inspired me to write when I was having a rough day. I wrote it at 1:30 in the morning on March 17. It has given me strength, courage, and the assurance that even though it is hard sometimes, everything will turn out alright.

For a Moment, I’m alright

I could not bear the wind today, and so I knelt and wept and prayed,
And when I lifted up my head, my tears were gone and Christ, He said,
“Trust in me, for I am here; call my name and I’ll be there."
And so my darkness turned to light, and for a moment, I’m alright.

I had to walk alone today, for people came and blocked my way.
I couldn’t stand the words they spake, and so my heart began to ache.
But then my Savior’s voice rang clear: “Daughter,” He said, “You must not fear.
Although alone it seems you stand, I’m here: reach up and take my hand.”
My darkness was dispelled by Light. Now, for a moment, I’m alright.

I couldn’t carry my load today; I tripped and fell along my way.
My burden seemed too hard to bear, but then I remembered Christ was there.
And since He’d giv’n me strength before, I knew he’d lift me up once more.
For He has born all pain for me - He suffered in Gethsemane.
And so I stood, my burden light, because He came, and I’m alright.

For verily I say unto you, blessed is he that keepeth my commandments, whether in life or in death; and he that is faithful in tribulation, the reward of the same is greater in the kingdom of heaven.
Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter, and the glory that shall follow after much tribulation.
For after much tribulation come the blessings.

The Epitome of Fairytales :)

Alright, so it's not a fairytale, but I sure felt like a princess!!! These last pictures are pictures of my date and I at a girl's choice school dance called MORP (prom backwards). I asked Clayton Young-  one of the nicest kids I know. I didn't know him that well when I asked him, but being around him was so fun!  From climbing through a broomstick to making pizza, the night was a blast! I really hope he enjoyed it as well. Plus, guys just don't understand how much a girl loves to dance- he taught me how to waltz :) I loved it. Thanks Clayton for a wonderful time! Of all the fishies in the sea, I'm glad you went to MORP with me!

I have just been on a fairytale high for the past couple of weeks :) you know, with Tangled and all. The thing about Tangled is that it appeals to an average girl like me. First of all, if I could adopt a chameleon, I would. Secondly, there isn't one girl I know that doesn't dream about a "prince charming", in my case, a Eugene...F... (I won't even try to spell his last name). It's someone like Eugene that I think all girls want to be around- funny, spunky, a good listener, someone to be there for you; he's the type of guy that we girls are all really wishing on stars for.
And speaking of wishing, I don't just wish for "fairytales": I believe in them :)

Fairytales

If life could be a fairytale
With stories cute and sweet,
Then each of us would be in Heav’n!
Because real life ain’t a treat.
In real life no one talks to mice,
Glass slippers aren’t in style,
And if you want a handsome prince,
You must do more than smile.
Carriages don’t come in pumpkins,
Not every girl can sing.
You can’t legitimately be a princess
By sleeping on a pea.
By golly, if a girl could win
A handsome prince’s heart
By learning how to dance the Waltz,
Then tell me where to start!
There’s no such thing as magic lamps,
Or talking frogs, or fish,
But I can tell you what to do
To grant your deepest wish.
The way to make your dreams come true
Isn’t by the evening star.
Nor do you have to rub a lamp
Or find a Wonka Bar.
You’re the hero, you’re the king,
The princess or the queen!
Don’t tell yourself you’re not capable;
That life is harder than it seems.
You might not have a magic lamp,
Or Fairy Godmother’s wand,
But you have the power to defy all odds
Of achieving what you want.
Don’t hide this power of light you have
By choosing to play small.
Standing still and shrinking back
Won’t help the world at all.
Happy endings, hopes, and dreams,
And wishes still come true.
But what you must remember now, is
Fairytales start with you.

I know that sometimes, girls might think that a fairytale life is not possible. I am reminded of Elaine S. Dalton's story during the last Young Women's General Conference:
"I have always loved the story of the son of King Louis XVI of France because he had an unshakable knowledge of his identity. As a young man, he was kidnapped by evil men who had dethroned his father, the king. These men knew that if they could destroy him morally, he would not be heir to the throne. For six months they subjected him to every vile thing life had to offer, and yet he never yielded under pressure. This puzzled his captors, and after doing everything they could think of, they asked him why he had such great moral strength. His reply was simple. He said, “I cannot do what you ask, for I was born to be a king.”

Girls- each of you was born to be a queen. And as Elder Uchtdorf says, "'Happily ever after' is not something found only in fairy tales. You can have it! It is available for you! But you must follow your Heavenly Father’s map."
I remember being a little girl,  dancing around with towels on my head pretending to get married and walking with my "glass slippers" on.  Ariel from The Little Mermaid was my hero.  Princesses were real- and I was going to be one someday. As you grow up, keep a fairtytale and a dream in your heart, because they do come true. You will have to experience adversity and trials, but I promise you, it will be worth it. Find moments of sunshine in your life and remember them forever.

"My dear young sisters—you who stand for truth and righteousness, you who seek goodness, you who have entered the waters of baptism and walk in the ways of the Lord—our Father in Heaven has promised that you will 'mount up with wings as eagles; [you] shall run, and not be weary; and [you] shall walk, and not faint’…You are princesses, destined to become queens. Your won wondrous story has already begun. Your ‘once upon a time’ is now…The day will come when you turn the final pages of your own glorious story; there you will read and experience the fulfillment of those blessed and wonderful words: ‘And they lived happily ever after.’” Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

Be loyal to the royal within you!

Radiant Tales: Preface

Welcome!

Butterflies, beetles, lady bugs, humming birds, bees, and caterpillars. All you who enjoy the beauty of the earth and, throughout your busy, life find time to smell the flowers. Radiant Tales will be a collection of stories and experiences that invovle fighting off bugs, standing up to the wind, growing taller, and enjoying the sunshine. All from the point of view of a little sunflower called Sunshine. (That's me!)

Sunshine is not the brightest flower in the garden, and she's not the tallest either. Hundreds of flowers, plants, and bugs live in her garden, and she watches out for each of them, hoping that they can survive until the harvest. She might not be able to do very much as a small flower, but she's there. And her friends and family know that. Some day she will grow up to be just like them.

Speaking of growing up, Sunshine has learned a lot from her past. Sometimes she will speak of foreign advendures she had when just a seedling. Since then, she has grown stronger and taller. Hey, two inches is a lot when you used to be 4' 10'', okay? She takes what she's given...and she's not as bitter as she used to be :) All that matters is that she's got her roots deep in the ground.

Roots. As one of the many essentials in life, Sunshine realises she couldn't survive without the ground she has been planted in, and her roots keep her there. Especially when morning glory (an awful plant that chokes it's victims- it looks harmless and beautiful, but it's really very decieving), weeds, and wind come, the only way she survives is because she is rooted in her spot (haha, rooted!).

Hopefully those who come along to smell the flowers and listen to the stories from Radiant Tales will smile, laugh, and feel a greater appreciation for the sunshine and radiance that grows everyday in their lives. Because Sunshine sure does.

With love and roses,

Sunshine
